Mosiah 11-13

Study question: What can we learn from the contrast of Abinadi and King Noah?

Summary: King Noah rules in wickedness. Abinadi prophesies that the people will be taken into bondage. He is imprisoned. The false priests quote the scriptures and pretend to keep the law of Moses. Abinadi is protected by divine power. He teaches the Ten Commandments. Salvation does not come by the law of Moses alone. God himself will make an atonement and redeem His people.

Scripture: Mosiah 13:29 “And now I say unto you that is was expedient that there should be a law given to the children of Israel, yea, even a very strict law; for they were a stiffnecked people, quick to do iniquity, and slow to remember the Lord their God;”

Rachael D: Hearts are mentioned 12 times in these chapters and this is where I see the difference between Abinadi and King Noah. King Noah and his priest followed the desires of their own hearts and put their hearts upon riches. They became prideful in their hearts and boosted of their own strength. Their eyes were blinded and they hardened their hearts against the word of the Lord. The commandments of God were not written on their hearts and they didn’t apply their hearts to understanding. When Abinadi is testifying to them the truth cuts them to their hearts but they understood not because of the hardness of their hearts. Abinadi was the opposite of King Noah.
