Study question: Why does the Lord still refine us sometimes through afflictions even though the Saviour already atoned for our sins?
Summary: Chapter 19 is a prelude for what is the Lord going to tell His people in chapters 20 and 21. In 19 Nephi describes the Atonement of the Saviour by emphasising the fact that he endures all the persecution because of His kindness towards us. The following two chapters are filled with message of hope where the Messiah offers freedom and gathers Israel in the last days.
Scripture: 1 Nephi 20:10 ”For, behold, I have refined thee, I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction”.
Rachael D: We need to be refined through afflictions so we can change ourselves and become better and eventually perfect. It’s through the hard times that we forced to look at ourselves and our desires. I like 1 Nephi 19:7 where he talks how different people find different things of worth. Understanding our afflictions and the atonement should help us value what really matters in our lives.
