Study Question: How did Lehi and Nephi show that they valued the scriptures?
Summary: Nephi was determined to do what God wanted him to do even with logic to the contrary. He went forth not knowing beforehand what he should do but knowing he should obey God and get the plates. Later he was commanded to kill Laban. Sarah complains against Lehi. The Lord provides a way for us to keep his commandments. Nephi’s motive for writing was to bring people to Jesus Chrsit so they could be saved.
Scripture: 1 Nephi 4:6 And I was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do. (v7 nevertheless I went forth)
Hollie: I think that Nephi was taught so well by his parents to be working toward higher goals. I think he knew from a young age about God’s plan for us- he knew that we were destined to become like him as we strive for righteousness. He recognised that the purpose and power of the scriptures was NOT to be pleasing to or popular with the “world”, but to bring people closer to God. And at the end of this reading assignment he suggests that the scriptures are pleasing to God and to those “not of the world”… so this week, if any of us here find joy in the scriptures, we can take it from Nephi that we are “not of this world”– we are doing better than we think we are at trying to be like our Heavenly Parents!
Torsten K: Maybe it is not the answer of the question, but I enjoyed reading about the importance of the scriptures.
“Wherefore, the things which are pleasing unto the world I do not write, but the things which are pleasing unto God and unto those who are not of the world.
Wherefore, I shall give commandment unto my seed, that they shall not occupy these plates with things which are not of worth unto the children of men.”
In other words: It is a book of revelation which matters to us. … and it might be worth it to read
Emily H: I agree! I love the reminder that the scriptures are for us to gain an uplifting knowledge of God. They matter to us. It’s not just a bunch of historical craziness. Who wouldn’t want to read it?!? I love when things relate directly to me.
Rachel D: I really like when Nephi asks his brothers if you believe the scriptures, why don’t you believe that Heavenly Father can do mighty things in your life. When they study the scriptures they find their genealogy and their amazing testimonies and experiences became part of them. They must have drawn strength from knowing they were related to Joseph of Egypt. Knowing our ancestors can help us know who we are.
Yiksee L: I like the scripture that Torsten K shared. So many times, the scriptures say, there were all these things that i could have shared, but I’m only going to, except for this little bit. Makes you think why what we do have is so important to know. What prompted them to cut out the other parts of Lehis writings I wonder?
