I’ve learned that God is a pretty organised guy, and the most basic unit of organisation He uses is the family. Regardless of how the world may consider this sacred unit, I believe it is designed to house principles of learning, stewardship, love, friendship, responsibility and accountability, success, failure, hard work, disappointment, loyalty, justice, pride, strength, dependency, and more. It is the beginning and the end of the human experience.
In the movie City Slickers, Billy Crystal learns that the meaning of life is “this” and he holds up one finger. His friend looks at him and waits for the answer, which Billy implies he’ll have to figure out for himself. For Billy and me, the meaning of life begins and ends with family. I believe there’s a reason they’re stuck with me, and I with them. I believe that everything I am and know started with my experience with this collection of knuckleheads, my crew.
